Haifa hosts two crucial academic institutions, the University of Haifa and the Technion, and Matam, one of the oldest and largest high-tech parks. Moreover, Haifa has The Carmelit, the only underground rapid transit system in Israel. It is a heavy industry centre of petroleum refining and chemical processing, previously the western terminus of an oil pipeline from Iraq via Jordan.
