Starting a walk in the street HaHauim, at the beginning of the road, on the right side, it is located the Yeshiva Bircas HaTorah. This yeshiva was founded by Rabbi Shimon Green. After we pass Yeshivas Bircas HaTorah, there is a typical arch in the style of old Jerusalem. The streets of ancient Jerusalem are spotless, also because there are dustbins almost on every corner. After we pass the arch, we find the Old Yishuv Court Museum located in Or HaHayim street.

Old Yishuv Court Museum, located in Or HaHayim street, shows the ancient Jerusalem as it was in the past for the last 200 years before the First Arab–Israeli War in 1948. After we pass the museum, on both sides, we notice the usual entrances of beautiful houses. There is a long iron railing on the right side in the old Jerusalem, which is useful, especially when it’s raining in the wintertime.

Or HaHayim street is located in old Jerusalem. In the Old City, there are four streets connected to Or HaHaym: Saint James, Ararat, HaShofar and Habad street.

From Jaffa Gate

If you come from Jaffa Gate, so the best is to walk along the Armenian Patriarchate and turn left to Saint James street, you will find Or HaHayim street.

Meaning Of Or HaHayim

In Hebrew ‘Or HaHayim’ means ‘light of life’. Additionally, in Or HaHayim street, you can find the Synagogue Ari Ha Kadosh. In the Jewish tradition, the most notable Kabbalist rabbi was Ari HAkadosh, born where this synagogue is located. Rabbi Ari was a Kabbalist rabbi and head of the Kabbalist community in Safed.
