Cardo street is a main street of the old Jerusalem dating back to the ancient Roman period. Along this street there are lined old Roman columns and it begins on Damascus Gate and ends up on Zion Gate of old city.
Cardo street has been a shopping center and it was founded in the times of the Roman emperor Hadrian in 135 AD. By the way 65 years after the siege of Jerusalem in the year 70 AD by the Romans, the emperor Hadrian built in place of the destroyed Temple in Jerusalem, the Aelia Capitolina that was a Roman colony.
Cardo street was starting at the Damascus Gate and the Roman emperor Hadrian was building on 135 AD the Damascus Gate as entrance to the old Jerusalem and the gate was including three arcs – the eastern arc remains up to our days. After Damascus Gate along the Cardo street a high column has been erected which under the order of the emperor Hadrian, today this column doesn’t exist anymore but we have prove of its existence from The Madaba Map, which is part of a floor mosaic, located in Jordan.
Maybe it’s a reason why Muslims called it the Damascus Gate with the name Bab Bab Amud (Gate of the Column) in the VII century when they conquered the old Jerusalem.
Today on Cardo street it’s possible to see old Roman columns, the street presents a typical archaeological site in the old Jerusalem. In 1967 archeologists discovered part of the wall that was belonging to the old Jerusalem at the time of Hezekiah, this part of wall is located at the end of Cardo street. Hezekiah has been the 13th king of Judah (727-698 BC).
